H. Oliver is a historian and poet. Much of his non-fiction writing is focused on New Zealand history, and he has also published several collections of poetry. Oliver worked for many years as a history professor, and on his retirement in 1983 he was appointed general editor of the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography, a position he held until 1990.
