It traces the arrival and settlement of the Maori people, of Cook's landing, with the welcome he received leading to him naming his landfall Poverty Bay, still so called today. The authors then follow the history of Maori-European relationships (sometimes hostile, often uncertain,) the expansion of European settlement, (NEW ZEALAND, REGIONAL HISTORY, EAST COAST, GISBORNE) W. H. Oliver is a historian and poet. Much of his non-fiction writing is focused on New Zealand history, and he has also published several collections of poetry. Oliver worked for many years as a history professor, and on his retirement in 1983 he was appointed general editor of the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography, a position he held until 1990.
